The new Swain Tatami mats in our Alexandria academy are perfect for training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and Muay Thai kickboxing. These mats are another improvement at Capital, making CJJ the premiere school for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax and the entire Washington DC metro area. Continue below to see several pics documenting the process.
Here's a video from 2005 featuring Capital Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt Jesse Ware fighting Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Jesse has since finished his time in the US Coast Guard and moved to Hawaii, but at the time before his departure from the Washington DC area, his skills in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu helped him win several MMA matches.
Marcelo Garcia & Andre Galvao Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Here's two clips from the Arte Suave DVD showing Marcelo Gracia and Andre Galvao training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
At the time, Marcelo was training in Fabio Gurgel's Sau Paulo Jiu-Jitsu Academy (he recently moved to New York to teach and train Gracie Jiu-JItsu). Since winning ADCC in 2003, Marcelo has been one of the most successful grapplers in the world in both gi and no gi competitions. He is a Mundial champion and ADCC 2005 champion, having defeated the likes of Renzo Gracie, Pablo Popovich, Diego Sanchez, Ricco Rodriguez, Vitor "Shaolin" Ribeiro and Andre Galvao.
This video helps dispell the myth that the best way to trian for competitions is at 100% all the time. Here, Marcelo is super relaxed, which is how we encourage our students at Capital Jiu-Jitsu in Alexandria to train, Washington DC, Fairfax and Arlington's premiere school for Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, MMA and Muay Thai kickboxing.
Also from Arte Sauve, this video show's Mundial Champion Andre Galvao trianing as a brow belt. Galvao is a mundial champion as well, and this video was shot at TT Academy in Sao Paulo, which has since disbanded.
This friendly sparring match took place at Capital Jiu-Jitsu's Alexandria headquarters. Both Jason and Jerry are blue belts in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under UFC legend Royce Gracie. If you live in Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Manassas or anywhere in the Washington DC area, visit Capital Jiu-Jitsu for classes in BJJ, MMA and Muay Thai.
We've been working on expanding the Capital JJ Store for some time with an online component coming soon. The next big development is a new custom CJJ shirt: the Jerry Jones Tee, which will feature a graphic of "The Beast" and a quote. Check out the mock up of the first shirt:
Be on the lookout for these shirts on the coming weeks.
All BJJ and Muay Thai classes are canceled Thursday, March 29th at the Capital Jiu-Jitsu headquarters in Old Town Alexandria. We'll be installing brand new Swain Tatame mats. For more info on the mats, click here.
Here's a video documenting the early days of the UFC. This was originally aired on ESPN, and it contains interviews with Rorion Gracie, Ken Shamrock and "Big" John McCarthy. Capital Jiu-Jitsu is the only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai and MMA academy in the the Washington DC area, including Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax, that is certified as a Royce Gracie Netowrk Chapter.
Dave Guider, pilot and CJJ blue belt, appeared on Washington DC 's Fox 5 morning news. Dave began training Brazilian/Gracie Jiu-Jitsu at our Alexandria academy for self-defense and fun after the 9/11 attacks. The report also mentions Dave's time in the Air Force and his current position in the Air Force reserves.
We've restocked all of our CJJ Anti-Bacterial Moisture Wicking Tees AND we now carry a WOMEN's tee. All styles are currently in stock in the school store - they're great for grappling or just wearing out. We also have more small CJJ patches (4" x 4").
These t-shirts wick moisture away from your body to keep you cool. The material dries fast and is ANTI-BACTERIAL, ANTI-FUNGAL, ANTI-MILDEW and STAIN RESISTANT, but feels just like a regular t-shirt! The logo is sublimated and won't crack, peel, or stick.
Other shirts lose their wicking properties after a few washes, but not ours! This patented fabric has the functions permanently built into the fabric and will not wash out.
All of Carlos' hard training definitely paid off: he dominated the fight executing the gamelplan to a 'T.' Watching the fight, who would've guessed a first-time MMA competitor could stay so relaxed and display such excellent technique in striking and grappling.
This fight took place in Sterling, VA, as part of the Valhalla event. With the addition of Muay Thai and Wrestling classes, Capital is the place for anyone in the Washington DC, Arlington, Alexandira and Fairfax areas to train MMA.
Here's a cool highlight video of Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's road to the Pride Grand Prix Title in 2005. See him face off against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (set to face Chuck Liddell in the UFC), Antonio Rogerio Nogeuira, Alistair Overeem and Ricardo Arona.
After Nick Diaz and Shinya Aoki both recently won Pride MMA matches with the gogoplata, the move has been getting a lot of attention. In this video the inventor of the gogoplata, Nino Schembri, explains the technique.
Capital Jiu-Jitsu team members traveled to New Jersey in force to compete in the Grapplers Quest Beast of the East Tournament. Several competitors made the trip, and everyone displayed a lot of heart and great technique.
Garrett Bontempo, now ranked one of the top 10 grapplers in the country, brought home another gold medal in his No-Gi Advanced division.
