Of no relation to the famous lead singer of The Misfits, this Danzig is by far the most experienced combatant on The Ultimate Fighter, with over twenty professional matches under his belt. A strict vegetarian and nature lover, Danzig’s first love was skateboarding, and he was a sponsored amateur during his teenage years. In 2000, Danzig traded in his skateboard for the mats of Casey Leonard’s gym in Pittsburgh, learning a great deal about BJJ under his tutelage. A year later, he left the Steel City behind to fight on the amateur circuit in Iowa before moving to California in 2002. He recently joined the Legends Gym in Los Angeles, home to fellow welterweight contender Karo Parisyan, as well as The Ultimate Fighter 5 finalist Manny Gamburyan, and hopes that living and breathing MMA while in the house for six weeks with no distractions will reinvigorate his training ethic and intensity, something that Danzig will admit has been difficult to maintain in recent years.
Away from the Octagon, Danzig lives with his girlfriend of four years who is a massage therapist in a chiropractic clinic. He is an avid photographer.
The Alexandria and Arlington area's premiere school of Muay Thai Kickboxing, Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for men, women and kids is adding a second mat space in September. The new space will bring the total training area of Capital Jiu-Jitsu Old Town to more than 3,700 square feet. The black dollamur mats with the CJJ logo are on their way and are the same mats used in the Xtreme Couture MMA Gym. New classes are coming soon, so check back often for updates. .
CJJ purple belt, Taylor Dixon, is joining the full-time Capital Jiu-Jitsu staff as the Competition Team Coach and Kids Instructor. Taylor will begin working September 4th, after his MMA fight this weekend. For more info on Taylor, check out Taylor's Bio.

Kyra Gracie made her first visit to Capital Jiu-Jitsu, putting on a FREE, women's only BJJ seminar. Kyra showed the women some Gracie Jiu-Jitsu aimed at "training with the guys." Her easy-going, down-to-earth personality and BJJ knowledge made for a fantastic experience for all the ladies involved. Women traveled from several Washington DC/Arlington/Alexandria-based BJJ and MMA schools and even as far away as Richmond and Chicago. Attendees also made donations to Shared Hope, raising over $1,000 for the charity.
Memebers of Capital Jiu-Jitsu, Bruice Weiler Jiu-Jitsu, Yamasaki, Richmond BJJ, Lloyd Irvin, Terry Brothers, Maxercise, Jiu-Jitsu Now, Ground Control, Georgetown University Judo Club, Trident and Fightworks. So, the free seminar proved a great way for women from different schools to connect.
Thursday's She'Safe Women's Self-Defense seminar was one of Capital Jiu-Jitu's best so far. Several women attended, getting their first taste of training BJJ tailored to women, and a few actually stayed afterwards to try intense carido workout and effective techniques of the Muay Thai Kickboxing class. CJJ offers the only women's self-defense/BJJ/Muay Thai Kickboxing/MMA program in Arlington, Alexandria and DC, and Capital Jiu-Jitsu will soon be offering weekly self-defense classes for women only.
The Capital Jiu-Jitsu In-House No-Gi Tournament took place this past weekend. Competitors were divided into three weight divisions for this submission grappling event. Afterwards, many also chose to participate in the absolute division. Comptetitors of all levels participated and all showed great BJJ.
Capital Jiu-Jitsu's list of serious competitors is growing, and this in-house event gave several students interested in competing the chance to get their feet wet and familiarize themselves with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/Submission Wrestling rules.
Here's a clip of Spencer "Aitor" Canup guest instructing in the Muay Thai class this past Saturday. Aitor is a Royce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu brown belt and an experienced MMA fighter. He was kind enough to visit our Alexandria location to teach both the Kickboxing and BJJ classes.
See Helio and Carlos Gracie in this video from the 1950's. This video gives some insight into the origins of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and the the legacy we're all trying to preserve.
As a Royce Gracie Network School, Capital Jiu-Jitsu offers classes in BJJ, MMA and Muay Thai to residents of Loudoun County, South Riding, Brambleton, Sterling, Arlington, Alexandria and the entire Washington DC Beltway. Our school carrys on the tradition started by Grandmaster Helio Gracie - we believe that Jiu-Jitsu and Self-Defense should be accessible by everyone, men, women and children and that our martial arts schools should be friendly safe and fun.
The first ever Capital Jiu-Jitsu BBQ came off without a hitch. There was plenty of great food, fun, swimming and even a helicopter fly-by courtesy of John James.
Royce Gracie visited CJJ's Alexandria headquarters on August 2nd to teach three awesome seminars: two for adults, one for kids. Royce's down-to-earth personality and relaxed teaching style isn't what you'd expect from a world-class Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, especially a UFC legend. While here, Royce promoted several blue belts and 6 NEW PURPLE BELTS, making CJJ home to 10 PURPLE BELTS. Congratulations to everyone who received promotions (see the full list below).
Royce was also kind enough to let us make a video of a few techniques:
