4 CJJ fighters participated in Mixed Martial Arts fights this weekend at Valhalla IX in Herndon/Sterling VA at the Dulles Sportsplex.

Valhalla IX saw a lot of great fights - and it is clear to me that the fight teams represented are really improving with respect to the caliber of fighter they are producing!

Stan was up first from CJJ. He fought very hard and stuck to a solid game plan - especially in the first round (he was using a guard attack strategy, hunting for a triangle choke.)

However, as the fight went on he took a couple of hard shots to the head which had an impact on his ability to keep a tight guard. He finished as a warrior, but the judges favored his opponent for this one.

Roland was up second. Roland's striking was neutralized by his opponent's wrestling - and once the fight hit the ground it was ground and pound vs pure jiu jitsu. His opponent, having 5 previous fights under his belt, said that Roland's guard was the tightest that he had ever experienced. And it showed as Roland took very little punishment throughout all of his three rounds. The decision came down to the takedowns that put Roland on his back, and so Roland had to take a loss on this one.

Third was Chad. Chad, for his first fight, went against a seasoned competitor with 6 previous fights under his belt. His competitor even took a North Carolina title at his last fight. But Chad went in blazing! He kept his opponent on the fence with his striking and wrestling. Set the tempo for the fight. Had some great takedowns. And neutralized his opponent's superior grappling skills. Chad did get caught in one knee bar attempt, but listened to me and kept his hips in and controlled the head and arm. He clearly won all three rounds for a solid victory for CJJ.

Last up was Tom Meehan. Tom was hungry for this fight. He kept his hunger bottled backstage for hours, but once it was time to warm-up you could see some serious rage from the Serial Killer . Most don't know that Tom seriously hurt his back doing CrossFit Total two weeks ago, and hasn't trained since then. But as a warrior he wanted to take the fight anyway. Frequent visits to Dr. Bills managed the injury and by fight night he was back to ready! He stuck to his game plan perfectly in the first round, but you could see his gas tank going empty towards the end of the second round. By round three his gas tank was totally empty (two weeks off was taking its toll). Though he had such a killer first round, his last round was all defense; the judges scored the fight a draw.

Last weekend, four Capital Jiu-Jitsu fighters participated in Muay Thai Kickboxing matches as part of the DC Metro Showdown IV. CJJ is quickly developing a reputation as one of Northern Virginia's top schools for kickboxing, producing fighters that are technical, well-rounded and highly conditioned. See the below for the full synopsis of this weekend's event.

<img src="http://www.ben-nall.com/images/mikea.jpg" height=270px width=360px

Capital Jiu Jitsu brought five competitors to the show last night, but only four fought. Unfortunately Chad's opponent had to back out at the last minute due to an injury.

Our night started out GREAT, with Loudoun's Jimmy Mackey winning on points. He was by far the dominant fighter, BUT we learned a valuable lesson for fighting Muay Thai rules - because one judge scored the bout evenly. We found out that though Jimmy dominated the fight both physically, and by punishing his opponent, the other opponent still racked up some points because he connected with teeps, knees and body kicks (a teep is a push or thrust with the underside of the foot). The lesson learned is that just being dominant and punishing can sometimes not be enough. Though in this case he was both those and still racked up more points in the eyes of two of the judges .

Next was Mike Snyder. Holy smokes, did he dominate! TKO in the third round! And he pulled off some amazing Muay Thai - including a bunch of superman punches that were pure awesome!

Then George Annab. George fought a very traditional Muay Thai opponent who really followed through on the beginning ring ritual. Fun to watch. George fought a tough fight, but lost on points in the end.

Finally, Ray Soto fought. Ray came out with blazing speed! I kept hearing about how fast Ray could be, but didn't expect to see such speed in action. His opponent was also super tough, and had one very cool leg sweep on Ray. They continued to go at it, and Ray ended up catching a foot to that button that means lights out. Ray was still a warrior and though his body was screaming no, his mind wasn't going to quit, and he still got up and tried to come back from the blow. The ref called it, however (which was a good call.)

In summary I want to say several things:

First, win, lose, or in Chad's case, not compete, all five of these guys have earned the respect of CJJ's staff and members. They all trained to win, making every sacrifice to do so, and because of that, they have been an inspiration to me personally, and to many that I talk to! I am very proud and impressed!

Second, Sean Croushorn has been a guiding force for the Muay Thai fighters, spending a LOT of additional time and personal resources helping these guys get ready for their event! THANK YOU SEAN!!!

Third, Tom Meehan and Iman Achhal were tremendous coaches for these guys regarding CrossFit and Zone Dieting.

Awesome job fighters and coaches!!!

Steve Hall
Beginning his journey in the martial arts at the age of 11, by 17 Steve had earned his first black belt in Tae Kwon Do. After moving to Florida, he started training judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) with Bill Murphy and Marcio Simas and recieved the purple belt under the Gracie Barra system. Later Charles dos Anjos took over as head instructor and Steve recived the brown and black belts under Royce Gracie.
